Book Review: Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus

This delightful picture book is an absolute cracker. It was one I picked up for pennies during the sad demise of British Bookstores last year and wasn't quite sure about, but Lara discovered it in the bookcase a few weeks ago and absolutely loves it.

The slightly surreal concept is that the bus driver goes on a break and tells the reader "Whatever you do, don't let the pigeon drive the bus". The rest of the book is taken up with pigeon addressing the reader, desperately pleading that he be allowed to drive the bus, complete with excuses and toddler-style tantrums.

The text is sparse and the vocabulary slightly Americanised, but it has wonderful illustrations which speak for themselves, and the repetition in the text and attitude of the pigeon, complete with childlike wheedling, is hilarious for both children and adults alike. This is one we never tire of reading.

Highly recommended for both boys and girls from about 20 months on.

  1. sounds like a very different book from the usual suspects out there. Will look into it.

  2. This is a great book - my youngest daughter was given it for her birthday in July!
