Review: The Kraken Black Spiced Rum

Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides: above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumbered and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages and will lie
Battening upon huge sea-worms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

The Kraken, Alfred, Lord Tennyson,1830
Who would have thought the mythical Kraken, much feared sea monster and creature of Norse mythology, would in the 21st century be giving its name to a new cult rum.  Following huge success in the USA, where it has rapidly become the fastest growing rum brand, The Kraken Black Spiced Rum is now available in four major UK supermarkets - Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

The Kraken is a spiced Caribbean rum aged and enriched with exotic spices including cinnamon, ginger and clove.  Just the thing for a cold winter's night!

I was a little intimidated by the ominous, inky colour, but delighted with both the aroma and flavour of the rum.  It's really thick and caramelly, betraying its sweet molasses roots.  Distilled in Trinidad & Tobago, the rum is aged for two years in ex-bourbon whiskey barrels, and then blended with 14 spices to produce the unctuous loveliness in the striking Victorian flagon-style bottle.  the two glass handles are said to mimic the eyes of the Kraken!

We first tried the rum on its own over ice, tempted as we were by this description:

Swirling the rum round a glass creates distinctive tentacle like drips
 as the rich liquid seeps back to the depths.

The flavour of the rum is unusual, but delicious, and it can be enjoyed with cola, as well as over ice.  Or why not create this lovely, spicy new cocktail:

The Perfect Storm

50ml Kraken Black Spiced Rum
25ml freshly squeezed lime juice
5ml sugar syrup
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Ginger beer

Build the ingredients over ice in a highball glass.
Top up with ginger beer.
Serve with two squeezed lime wedges.

Other cocktail recipes are available on The Kraken website.

Kraken Black Spiced Rum looks set to be the big hit of Christmas 2012, either as the base of the cocktail of choice, or as a winter warmer, but perhaps even more importantly as that all-important gift solution for the man (or woman) who has everything.

The Kraken has an ABV of 40% and an RRp of £22.99 for a 70cl bottle.  It is also available in Harvey Nichols, Majestic Wine and Selfridges, and Peckham's Delicatessens in Scotland.
