Review: Stokke MyCarrier

This week is National Curry Week, National Chocolate Week and International Babywearing Week.  now I can manage eating chocolate whilst wearing baby, but not sure I could eat curry at the same time...  Although Sophia loves curry, so she may not be entirely averse...

Well, I can't offer you chocolate or curry right now dear readers, but I can tell you about the most amazing baby carrier we have ever owned.  We have worked our way through quite a few, and they all have their pros and cons, but when the Stokke PR offered to send me a MyCarrier to help with my dodgy back, I was beside myself with excitement.

I have been coveting these beauties ever since I first heard tell that there was a Stokke carrier coming, and had stroked them lovingly in the shops a few times.  Before the MyCarrier arrived, I was beginning to think that I would have to stop carrying Sophia in a sling or even a carrier because an old shoulder and back injury was making it so uncomfortable.  Thankfully, the MyCarrier has saved me from giving up.  Let me tell you more.

What they say...

Stokke® MyCarrier - The 3 in 1 baby carrier

The Stokke® baby carrier grows with your child, without compromising on comfort and ergonomics for your baby or you. The baby carrier can be used from birth and up to 3 years and offers 2-way front and back carrying.

For 9 months your baby has got used to your rhythm.  Why stop now?

We are all born into this world already connected to those around us. The careful rhythm of a pregnant mother’s movements and heartbeat and the muffled voice of a soon to be dad, all add to a baby’s feelings of safety and security. Our 40 years of ergonomic know how creating multi-functional products designed in the best interest of the child, provides the foundation for our thoughtfully developed baby carrier. The Stokke® baby carrier grows with your child, without compromising on comfort and ergonomics for your baby or you.

Always close to you.™

Stokke® MyCarrier: 3 in 1 multi-use baby carrier easily transforms as your child grows from birth through toddler years. Thoughtful ergonomics for both you and baby. Stokke® baby carrier has an optimal positioning for your child with high tech safety features found in high quality mountaineering gear.

MyCarrier includes three components: the main harness with integrated hip belt, front carrier, and back carrier. Secured by double locking carabiners, safe soft breathable organic cotton textiles, all materials free from harmful substances.

What we say...

Ease of use:

Although the carrier comes in three parts, it is easy to use straight out of the box, with very clear instructions included, and even more information on the website, as mentioned above.  We used it in the front facing outwards position with Sophia to go on a long walk on holiday, and I got the hang of it straight away.  We have subsequently used the front facing inwards when she wanted to ssleep, and I have even tried the back carrying position with Lara.  All have been fantastically easy to use, although I would advise having someone help you the first couple of times until you get the hang of it.

Comfort for parent:

SO comfortable!  As I said, I was on the vergee of havig to give up babywearing, which really upset me, until I started using this carrier.  It's a revelation!  The back plate is such a great fit on the back and really helps keep good posture, something which often slips when you are wearing baby.  The baby's weight is distributed evenly so there is no pressure on the shoulders, and the whole carrier fits so comfortably that you almost forget you're wearing it.

In back carrying mode, you also need to insert the rigid support plate, ensuring back and neck comfort, esential when carrying a heavier child on your back.

Comfort for baby:

Much recent research has focussed on baby's positions in slingss and carriers, and unfortunately much criticism of babywearing has come about as a result.  With the MyCarrier, baby is seated in the perfect position, with proper support for buttocks and thighs. The wide leg position provides an optimal ergonomic position to promote proper growth and development of the baby’s hips.

The width adjustments you make to the Stokke® MyCarrier when converting from inward to outward facing also ensure very solid back support for baby.  Both girls are very comfortable in it, and love 'travelling' around in the MyCarrier.

Comfortable for both parent and child, 3 modes of use, suitable from newborn right up to 3 years (or 15kg/33lb if sooner), and made from organic cotton with excellent attention to detail and fantastic features, we highly recommend the  MyCarrier, both to seasoned babywearers and those thinking of giving it a go for the first time.

The Stokke website has extensive information about all aspects of the carrier, excellent instructions for all three modes of use, and a handy video on how to use the MyCarrier.

The Stokke® MyCarrier retails at £139 and is available through Mothercare, Mamas & Papas, Kiddisave and many independent stores.  The nearest stockist to you can be found here.

  1. I also have back issues, compression problems in my lower spine.

What is the support like for the lower back with the Stokke MyCarrier?

  2. Absolutely brilliant! My boy alex loves to be suspended in the air - not held against me so this looks perfect.
