One of the greatest shows of all time, and still running at Her Majesty's Theatre in London after an incredible 27 years, is Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. With a mesmerising and unforgettable score, featuring the famous All I Ask of You and the haunting Music of the Night; dramatic, jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking special effects this is a truly spectacular show. Epic in the true sense of the word!
Originally written as a novel by Gaston Leroux, a versatile French author with an abiding passion for the theatre, after years of struggle he has left an abiding legacy in the shape of this famous love story set during an extraordinary episode in the history of France’s greatest opera house. Taking this novel, Le Fantome de l'Opera, as his inspiration, Lloyd Webber worked with Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe to fashion this spectacular piece of musical theatre, which opened in the West End in 1986.
With Michael Crawford in the title role, the musical won the 1986 Olivier Award for Best Musical, with Crawford also winning the gong for Best Actor in a Musical. Considered to be the most successful musical of all time, Phantom has taken over £3.5 billion at the box office worldwide, and been seen by over 130 million people in 145 cities in 27 countries.*
