Review & Giveaway: Adventures in Zambezia DVD - Ended

Take to the skies and visit the awe-inspiring Zambezia River Valley in Africa when Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases the high-flying and heart-warming family adventure Adventures in Zambezia [DVD] [2013] tomorrow.


From Triggerfish Animation Studios (Khumba) comes this all-new CG animated adventure about a young, high-spirited falcon that journeys to the famed bird city of Zambezia. The movie features an all-star cast led by Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park), Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek) and Samuel L. Jackson (Django Unchained).

We hadn't heard of this film before we asked to review it, but it's great!  This is set to do for birds what other animations have done for four-legged creatures.  The plot revolves around  Kai, a high-spirited rather naive young falcon, who seeks adventure and excitement in his young life.  He decides to leave his home and his father, Tendai (Jackson), to seek out the legendary city of birds, Zambezia.

Tiring of his comfortable but boring home near Victoria Falls, where the biggest excitement is diving into the crevass to the count of 5 Mississippi, Kai defies his father's strict rules on not straying beyond the Katungu Boundary.  When he meets oddball stork pair, Gogo and Tini, he hears of a world beyond his own, a bird city where opportunities for a talented flyer like himself abound.

Feeling betrayed by his father who knew of but never talked about this amazing bird city, Kai sets off to discover it for himself.  He soon meets new friends, and foes in the shape of two Marabou Storks who have joined forces with Budzo, a vicious egg-eating Leguaan, and hatched a plan to take control of the island city.  In his quest to protect and save Zambezi, Kai faces up to his past and learns that no bird is an island, and everyone needs people birds to love them.

This is a really sweet story with an edge, and stunning animation.  Lara is probably still a bit young for the story, but really liked the amazing flight shots, and the DVD will be one she regularly comes back to.
