DVD Review: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Welcome to Ponyville

I was slightly too old for the My Little Pony craze when it first came about back in 1983, but well remember the collectable ponies with their brush and style-able manes, cute pastel colours, and expressive faces.  Since then there have been four 'generations' of My Little Pony toys, with the current incarnation launching in 2010.  You can read all about the different generations of ponies - a proper who's who of Ponyville! - here.

Lara was first introduced to the cute little ponies about a year ago when we were sent some as a gift from Hasbro.  What we didn't know then is that this fourth generation of My Little Pony toys was launched to coincide with a TV series, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.  This animated television series has been running in the US since 2010, and is aimed at girls aged 2 to 11 years old.  It has been highly praised for its humour and moral outlook, and achieved huge popularity over the pond.

The good news is that the show has now launched on DVD in the UK!  The premise of the show is following the progress and adventures of a studious young unicorn pony named Twilight Sparkle who has a gift for magic spells, as her mentor Princess Celestia guides her to learn about friendship and life in the town of Ponyville.  She is aided and abetted by her cute little baby dragon assistant, Spike, and acquires a coterie of pony friends to have her adventures with.

In the first double episode of the first DVD My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Welcome To Ponyville [DVD], Twilight becomes close friends with five other ponies: Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie.  Each represents a different face of friendship, and helps teach Twilight that it is better to ahve good friends than to tackle life alone.  The six ponies share a series of adventures and help out other residents of Ponyville, whilst working out the troublesome moments in their own friendships.

Viewers quickly learn about the different ponies' characters, as well as following the sometimes complex storylines.  Lara has been absolutely transfixed by the DVD, and regularly re-enacts parts of the stories with her own pony collection.  Sophia is also more than happy to sit and watch an episode or two quietly - a rare thing in our house!

Join Twilight Sparkle and her pony friends Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and Applejack on their enchanting and laughter-filled adventures as they discover the most powerful magic of all time, the Magic of Friendship!

No need to ask if we would recommend this DVD - a HUGE yes!!!  Both girls love it, it guarantees some quiet time with a cup of tea for Mummy, and it is just lovely.  BUY IT!!!!

The episodes on this DVD are:

  • Friendship is Magic – Part 1
  • Friendship is Magic – Part 2
  • Griffon the Brush-off
  • Look Before You Sleep
  • Swarm of the Century
  • Owl’s Well That Ends Well

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Welcome To Ponyville is available now for the first time on DVD, and is widely available from all good retailers, priced at £12.99

  1. I was too old for My Little Pony the first time around, but I would love for my stepdaughter to get into them, she loves horses!
