Making Some Extra Cash

So, you've figured it out – having a baby isn't exactly the most financially effortless experience in the world! Stating the obvious here, but it’s evident that you wouldn't trade your precious little one(s) for all the money on the planet. And, as we've discussed here, going back to work isn't necessarily going to be the right choice for everyone. But what about if you just want a little extra cash?

There are plenty of opportunities out there. Whether you want to blog from home, use some creative skills such as painting or designing to go freelance, or even do something like coach a football team one night a week, there are plenty of little ways you can help your cash flow. Sometimes, you’ll need to volunteer on a few projects first. Often, hard work (for free) will be respected over time and that’s when you can start making some money! If you’re not sure how to market your services, you’ll probably need to hire someone to make you a website. Alternatively, you could ask a friend, or even learn yourself, if you picture yourself doing it long term. An investment in a course from Xchange Training might be a good idea!

One of the main selling points when it comes to working flexibly at home is that you can indeed do it from, um, your home. However, sometimes with all the distractions of raising kids, it’s nice to have a little space to yourself, which is why renting an office in a local city might be a good idea. You don’t have to go too corporate, of course, but a great, welcoming place like these Priestgate Offices in Peterborough can be adapted to any business needs. I’d imagine there are similar options in other cities, too. Just make sure everything you’re doing is above board and keep records of your incomings and outgoings.

If you’d rather not have to deal with all of the fun of the taxman (ha!) with an extra job, why not just sell a few bits and bobs? Ebay is a given, of course, but then there are also uber modern apps like Depop and Music Magpie as well. Easily accessed with your smartphone, they take a ton of the hassle out of the process, and again, can be done without a load of prior planning. Of course, if you do want to go a little old school, you can always do that as well. Plenty of towns still have car boots sales, or you could even arrange your own.

Of course, when it comes to earning some extra cash, it can seem great to treat yourself. Just remember – just because you made a few sales or had a few bits of work this month, it doesn't necessarily mean you’ll be able to achieve the same the next. Don’t get too ahead of yourself, and as always – don’t live beyond your means.

  1. some great advice, I used to love ebay but I think they are getting too greedy with the fees
