The Best Canapes, Party Food & Savoury Snacks

Whether you are hosting a Christmas or New Year party, looking for pre-dinner nibbles, or just after some bits to stock your fridge and larder with, we have tested some of the best around.  Here's what we thought...

The Co-operative has a wide range of both frozen and chilled party food, all of which cooks at 200 degrees, so all you have to think about is timings.  In the frozen range, choose from a selection that includes Oriental snacks, Indian snacks, pastry canapes, and some yummy mini chocolate eclairs.  The chilled party food includes breaded mozzarella bites, Indian selection, mini steak and ale pies, Oriental selection, mini toad in the holes, coconut Iksa skewers, mini cheese and onion souflettes, mixed olives and feta, and cream cheese pepperdews.  We like the Loved by Us range, including Mini Cheese and Onion Souflettes, Brie and Cranberry Filo Parcels Open Tartlets and Sweet Potato Rostis.

Morrisons has a fantastic pastry canapé selection which includes cheese puffs, tomato and red pepper bites and mushroom lattices.  These mouthfuls of crisp and fluffy pastry are well-seasoned and have great flavours.  They will go extraordinarily well with a glass of Prosecco or two!  Lots of other party food options instore, including Bucks Fizz olives, a selection of pitted Greek Halkidiki olives with orange zest in a sunflower oil, Champagne vinegar and orange oil marinade.  Yum!

If nuts are your thing, try the salted, smoked Finest Hickory Nuts from Tesco, a selection of sweet almonds, cashew nuts and macadamia nuts with sea salt, gently smoked in batches over hickory wood chips for an authentic, rounded flavour. finest* Hickory Smoked Nuts with Sea Salt cost £4 for 225g; a finest* Spiced Fruit & Nut Selection is also available. We also liked the Ras el Hanout Nut Mix by Heston from Waitrose, an unusual combination of nuts and Moroccan spice, £3.69 for 140g.

One of our favourite party foods that both look and taste great, are the Frozen Edamame Bean Straws with Mild Wasabi Mayo from Tesco.  These cute filo pastry straws are delicious on their own but perk up no end with the addition of the included Wasabi mayonnaise, a great idea.  £2 for 12

We also tried the Tesco Frozen Sweet & Sour Vegetable Wontons, vegetables in a sweet and sour sauce wrapped in filo pastry and formed into a wonton shape.  These weren't to my taste, but Steve and his friend enjoyed them.  £1 for 12

All Tesco party food can be cooked at 190 degrees.  Try it with finest* Slovenian Sauvignon Blanc Furmint 75cl, £7.99.  We also love the Tomato & Mozzarella Bites, little morsels of puff pastry with a creamy tomato and mozzarella topping, sprinkled with oregano.  Sophia can't get enough of these!  Just as well they're fantastic value at £1 for 20, guess what our freezer's full of!

Look out for our wine and drinks guides coming soon...

Enjoy your party!
