Review: Kitchen Gadgetry and Accessories from Aldi

Growing up in the '70s, the chest freezer and the pressure cooker were the twin bastions of 'fast food'.  The closest we had to ready meals were Fray Bentos tinned steak & kidney pies and Vesta boil in the bag curries.  Most housewives as they were frighteningly still known would fill their capacious freezer at Bejam's and then produce a fortnight's worth of meat, potatoes and frozen veg meals.  Thank God I turned vegetarian fairly promptly, but not before consuming successive stews, casseroles, liver & bacon etc, all of which had made their journey from freezer to plate via pressure cooker.  And brown food was king, as you can see from the advert below!

I remember the pressure cooker as a rather frightening, hissy thing with a temper which needed careful watching and regular placating, so I must admit to feeling rather apprehensive about trialling one when Aldi first asked us to.  However, the modern pressure cooker is a different beast entirely and the 4L Russell Hobbs Pressure Cooker currently available in Aldi is a fantastic bit of kit.  With an auto-locking safety system, pressure ready indicator and removable steamer basket with stand, it is suitable for gas, electric and solid plate hobs.  We have tried brown rice in there this evening and it cooked so quickly, and our pistou bean soup/casserole yesterday was delicious!

It has a 4 litre capacity, 10 year guarantee, and retails at £22.99.

We also love the fantastic Russell Hobbs AURA Juice Extractor which has an extra wide spout to take whole fruit.  It can extract maximum juice from both hard and soft fruit and vegetables, and has a capacious 2 litre pulp container and 750ml juice jug.  The removable stainless steel blade  and micr mesh filter are both easily removed and easy to clean.  We drink a lot of juice and have worked our way through a number of juicers over the years, and this is definitely one of the best we have tried.  It combines the juice of different varieties well and seems to readily switch from harder to softer fruits and vice versa, unlike a number of models out there.  Really impressive, and a great price at just £39.99, including a 2 year warranty.  This is going to get a lot of use in our house, with Lara and Sophia already lining up their juice combo ideas!

We also received the brilliant storage caddies which will make our current cupboard reorganisation significantly easier!  Great value at just £2.49.  And we love the sets of four kitchen brushes for £1.99 each, when we can wrestle them back from the toy kitchens though...
