Make It Happen This Summer #makeithappen

Back in March I worked with the Post-it Brand from 3M on their Make it Happen campaign.  We pondered on the meaning of happiness, making life happier with simple choices and acts every day, and using positive affirmations, written on Post-it Notes of course, to improve happiness and wellbeing.  As the face of the campaign, Katie Piper had much to say on the topic too.  You can read all about it here.  The Make It Happen competition continues until the end of the year, and summer is a great time to think about what you want to make happen this year, and beyond.

For many of us the every day gets in the way of choosing happy.  There are bills to pay, letters to write, relatives and friends to visit, errands to run, etc etc etc.  All those life admin tasks rush in to fill in any available space between work/kids/eating/sleeping, and although we have 168 hours a week to spend as we choose, every one of us says we don't have time for this, that or the other.

I'm just as guilty of it as anyone else.  In that first post, my goals were to find 40 minutes a day just for me, that's less than 5 hours a week.  30 minutes a day to read and 10 minutes a day to potter in my balcony garden.  Well, the gardening goal has definitely been achieved and I love my 10 minutes (or more!) a day outside, dead-heading, picking anything ripe, tending to the plants, and often just admiring my handiwork.  But the reading goal has unfortunately not been achieved, far from it.  Just look at my teetering to read pile!

I think I better start making some inroads on that!!  And what better time to start again than over the summer?  For many of us, the summer holidays are the first time after New Year that we have a chance to relax our busy schedules and spend some time reflecting on life.  Whether you're holidaying at home or overseas, taking some time out to think about your goals and plans for the rest of the year, and your longer term ambitions too, is a great way to spend some of your summer downtime.  (And reading, of course!)

I love the example from the Post-it Make It Happen competition site above, a great way to organise your fitness goals for the week, and of course, with the added flexibility of Post-it notes, it can be updated week after week.  Whether your goals are fitness, love, work or life-oriented, pasting them up in places you will see them often is a great way to stay on task and keep motivated.  Post-it Super Sticky Notes are perfect for this as they stay in place, even on vertical surfaces, thus helping to keep your goals at the forefront of your mind.

Another great way to stay motivated is to paste inspirational quotes and mantras alongside your goals.  By encouraging positive thoughts every time you see them, these can help to cement your goal as well as giving you the confidence and self-belief needed to achieve them.  So when you're writing your goal Post-it(s), why not add a positive affirmation alongside as a fabulous way to keep focused and motivated?  If you're not sure where to start, just search online for positive affirmations, or you could try Katie Piper's book.

My next main life goal is a fairly simple one: to make the most of summer!  As we are all too aware in the UK, summer can be over in a flash and many of those summery plans remain undone come September.  While the children are still so young, we want to really try to make the most of every opportunity to have fun in the sun, without work getting in the way.  Unfortunately, as a freelancer, this can often be easier said than done!  So on the fridge, the tea & coffee cupboard, the bathroom mirror, the laptop, the TV, and many other key spots, we have put up this Post-it Super Sticky Note:

The quote alongside it is by the US poet William Carlos Williams, and sums up our thoughts on life, not just summer - life will sing its own song if you let it.  That means embracing opportunity; making the most of every day, hour and minute; and letting happiness and your hopes and dreams lead the way.  Now all we have to do is let life do the living, embrace happy, and let our summer sing!

  1. My goal for this summer is to eat as much seafood as possible since I'm only home for 2 weeks.

  3. my goal this summer is to catch up on some reading. I blog less in the summer with the kids at home, so I read while the kids play in the garden
