Food Fortnight: The Best Puddings for Christmas 2015, Traditional and Alternative

Puddings at Christmas don't have to be the traditional boozy, fruit-laden sort, so here we have a rundown of the best around, both traditional and alternative.  Whether you yearn for lemon, fruit or chocolate, hot or cold, we've got the best.  Which one (or several!) will you choose?

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Sticky Toffee & Pecan Bundt Cake is delicious, the perfect combination of sweetness and saltiness, with a great depth of flavour from the chestnuts.  This works as both cake and dessert, just add a dollop of whipped cream or some raspberries and creme fraiche.  It's ambient too, so you can keep one in the cupboard and whip it out as a dessert for unexpected guests.  Perfect.

Caymanas Rum Cake, Ocado

The Co-Operative has this Truly Irresistible Millionaires Salted Caramel Dessert which is just divine.  It's amazing, not too rich, and with just enough saltiness to the caramel.  The crisp gold dragees on the top add texture all the way through to the biscuit base.  Just lush.

Sainsbury's has two very different puddings in its Taste the Difference range: a traditional cognac-matured, nut and fruit-filled delight of richness in its 18 Month Matured Christmas Pudding; and a modern take in the Salted Maple, Date, Cranberry & Chestnut Pudding.  We loved the traditional one, rich, boozy and just right with Brandy butter, thick cream etc.  With the Salted Maple one, we weren't at all sure what to expect but it is a delight.  Still rich, Christmassy tasting in a traditional way because of the fruit, but with lots of other layers and interest to it with the chestnut and salted elements.  A real alternative, but a nice addition to the usual festive fare.

Riverford's Organic Christmas Pudding is unlike any other, it's full of fruit, spice and brandy, but with a few added extras: grated organic apples and carrots.  It's light, fresh and delicious.  And best of all you'll still be able to move after eating it!  A really impressive and unusual pudding, order now for Christmas deliveries -

The Hidden Clementine Christmas Pudding is a key product in the Heston from Waitrose range, so much so that it usually sells out pretty early so get to your local Waitrose and snap one up!  Moist, fruity, and packed with a delicious glace clementine at its centre, this rich pudding is very impressive for a bought pud, well worth trying.

If you fancy something lighter, the Signature Spice Fruited Sponge Pudding has fruit, nuts, glace fruit and ginger.  Moist and fruity, we love the addition of the festive cranberries and the gingery, spicy flavours is a real Christmassy treat.  An unusual and delicious treat.
