Food Fortnight: The Best Vegetarian Mains & Accompaniments

The range of ready-made vegetarian fare is improving every year - a far cry from 30 years ago when my roast dinner was just the vegetables!  Whether you are catering for one or two veggies on Christmas day and not sure what to pick up, or if you're vegetarian yourself and don't want to do the leg work, here are the best of the vegetarian offerings this year.

Morrisons M Signature Christmas Jewelled Mushroom Bake is a combination of roasted butternut squash, cranberries, pumpkin seeds and goat’s cheese in a flavourful rice and barley risotto.  A lovely idea and perfect for warming winter meals, but I'm not sure it works that well with the usual Christmas dinner trimmings.  But if you are going for a completely different style of meal on Christmas Day, this would be perfect.

We also loved the frozen Morrisons Nut Roast with Sage & Onion Sauce and Sprouts with Chestnuts and Thyme Butter.  Their Spiced Red Cabbage is lovely too, just the right combination of flavours, and with the nice addition of cranberries.  The M Signature Carrots & Parsnips with an Apricot Glaze are sweet and sticky, and a great contrast to the salty flavours on your Christmas lunch plate.

Thank Goodness Luxury Nut Roast, Ocado

Pumpkin, Pecan and Cranberry Loaf, Asda

Asda's Extra Special range offers lots of delicious accompaniments and side dishes,
including this delicious and gorgeous looking Chioggia beetroot side dish:

Maple Roasted Carrot, Cranberry & Pecan Roast, Tesco (frozen)
Wine match: finest* Carménère Colchagua

Festive Brie, Cranberry & Chestnut Wellington, Tesco (frozen)
Wine match: finest* Piwen Chardonnay

Fry's Vegetarian Soy & Quinoa Country Family Roast is a firm-textured pate type roast which slices well and works brilliantly as the main element of a traditional Christmas dinner with all the expected accompaniments.  Bound to please meat eaters as well as vegans and vegetarians, it is a flavourful roast with a good hint of pepper and sage.  Available from Ocado and other retailers, you can find out more here.

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Celeriac Dauphinoise is great if no-one else really likes celeriac (i.e. in our house!)  This side dish combines finely sliced celeriac and Vivaldi potatoes in a double cream, garlic and Gruyere sauce.  Very indulgent, but delicious.

The Taste the Difference Rainbow Glazed Carrots is a selection of vibrantly coloured orange, purple and yellow carrots with a rich, sticky cranberry and orange glaze to enhance the natural sweetness of the vegetables.  Looks amazing on the plate!

There is also a rich and luxurious By Sainsbury’s Braised Red Cabbage Kit which gives an almost do it yourself dish, the perfect combination of red cabbage, red onion and apple.

Whatever you're having for your Christmas dinner, classic relishes such as cranberry sauce and horseradish are always a welcome addition to the table.  We love The English Provender ones, and don't forget you can turn your leftover cranberry sauce into these delicious muffins.
