Our Christmas Wine & Fizz Picks 2015

I'm not going to say this is the the most important part of the Christmas entertaining planning, because that leads to a judgement or two, but hey, it kind of is!  If you can't indulge in some fine wines and great drinks choices at Christmas and New Year, well, when can you?  And don't miss our Christmas cocktails feature too!

Cute idea: float hibiscus flowers in fizz, glassware from a selection at Lakeland

White

Our top picks include:

A cool, flinty Chablis from Lidl

I heart wines Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz
Quaffable, easy-drinking, fun party wines

Sparkling

Lidl Prosecco is delightfully pale with a lemony nose, and has a good amount of bubbles.  It tastes of Garibaldi biscuits with a hint of lemon and apple, and a dry finish.  This would work well with both sweet and savoury foods, but nothing too salty please as it would ruin it.

Asda's Asti is a great big frothy fizz, perfect for parties

Louis Bernaud Premier Cru Champagne, Asda

Abbazia Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore, Ocado is another easy-drinking party fizz, lovely palate-cleansing aperitif and a great match for salty canapes.

Pignoletto Doc Spumante Brut, Sainsbury's - delicious!

Aldi's Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut has generated a cult following amongst Aldi
fans and Champagne aficionados.  A real corker!!

If you're looking for low alcohol, the classic Babycham sparkling perry is a retro hit sure to hit the spot, whilst for a non-alcoholic alternative, try the Echo Falls Sparkling Infusion and Shloer's lovely celebratory Celebration, available in pink and white fizz versions.

Rose

Who says you can't drink rose in winter?  The Mademoiselle Comedie Bordeaux Rose from Ocado is a bright, light, fruity rose which is perfect with party canapés and starters.  It has dark berry fruit, but no sweet or confected after taste, and it's not too acidic either.

Bloc Giannattasio Organic Nero Di Troia Rose Puglia DOC is a rounded, bright, dry and fruity rose with a great colour. It works with pretty much any dish, so is a really safe pair of hands if you are not sure what type of wine to go for when going to a dinner party, for example.

South African Tiger Horse Old Vine Cinsault is a deep rose or a light red, with lovely colour and depth.  It boasts a lively palate, and a nice medium-bodied style with good backbone to cut through salty snacks & dishes.  Available from Ocado.

Red

Dark Horse offers great value, fruit-filled flavourful wines at a fab price. We love the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, perfect for everyday drinking but equally at home at a dinner party or party.

Vina Pomal Riocha Crianza matches medium-flavoured vegetarian dishes like nut roast or pastry-based dishes, e.g. a vegetable Wellington. It has a rounded flavour and a long finish, a great rioja with a pleasing balance of oak and fruit.

Wine Atlas Bobal, Asda

Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a big mouthful with pinging flavours, full of blackcurrant and light vanilla.  Just how cabernet sauvignon should taste.  It's great with rich dishes like tomato-based sauces and casseroles, and pasta bakes.

The Lisa McGuigan range of wines comes from the daughter of one of Australia's foremost wine producers, and she does her family proud!  Well-rounded flavour-packed wines full of character and pizazz.  We love the lively Shiraz, great for Christmas drinking.

Morrisons award-winning M Signature Pinotage is a big red with a spicy, slightly smoky finish, and ripe blackberry fruit. The perfect winter wine, it's lovely on its own, or great with hearty winter dishes.

Chateau Bru Lagardette Cahors from Ocado is a great gift wine, and for us veggies, perfect with nut roasts plus all the trimmings or mushroomy dishes.  A big mouthful of red, proper French Malbec, which is quite understated compared to its Argentinian cousin, powerful but not overpowering, and works brilliantly with the contrasting flavours of the cranberry sauce, stuffing and gravy.  Wonderful.

Dessert

If you are looking for a dessert wine, the Dulong Reserve Sauternes from Ocado is beautiful perfection at a bargain price, a wonderful Sauternes to partner those Christmas desserts, Christmas cake and mince pies.  It's delicious with cheese too, especially Stilton.

And if you prefer sherry, or even if you don't, the Noe 30 Year Old Pedro Ximenez Viejo is just amazing.  Full of big flavours and aromas it matches chocolate, desserts and sugary macaroons.  The ultimate sweet sherry with bright raisin fruit and rich undertones of vanilla and chocolate, it's rich and unctuous.

Mulled

Ready-mixed mulled wines are ten a penny these days, but if you are looking for something a little different try this great range of flavoured wines from Echo Falls.  With winter spice, orange & cranberry and even cocoa & orange flavours, there's a lot to try.  We love the cranberry-filled one, very drinkable!
