The Best FREE Family Outings in England this Autumn

The air is crisp and the leaves are a blur of vibrant yellow, reds and browns. I t’s cold, but it’s not hibernation time yet!  So wrap up warm, pack some sandwiches and have a wonderful autumn adventure with the family.  Here are a few of the best places to visit this season.  They’re all great for children, and most importantly, they’re FREE!


South West - Tarka trail, Devon

The Tarka trail is one of the country’s longest traffic free cycling paths.  The Great Torrington to Bideford stretch is 6 miles and very family friendly with stunning scenery. The trail is quite smooth and easy going, making it perfect for little ones.

South East - Richmond Park, London

Keep an eye out for the 630 red deer that roam the park, but be careful!  Autumn signals the start of the rutting season where males clash antlers in an attempt to attract females and fight off rivals!

East of England - Sheringham Park, Norfolk

Lovely family walks that are perfect for children with a love for wildlife.  There are some amazing look out points and viewing platforms, plus a nice little café for refreshments.

West Midlands - Queenswood Country Park, Herefordshire

The trees are beautiful at this time of year and there's free parking, a good play area and nice little shop and café.  Overall a great place to spend a few hours with the children.

East Midlands - Wollaton Hall and Deer Park, Nottingham

Wollaton Hall is a spectacular Elizabethan mansion and deer park.  The impressive gardens and parkland are the main pulling factor and there are plenty of activities for kids and adults alike.

Yorkshire and Humber - Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield

The sculpture park is a great alternative to the traditional often drab gallery environment.  YSP is basically an open air gallery set in the beautiful grounds and gardens of a 500 acre estate.  Culture for all the family!

North West - Tarn Hows, Lake District

Tarn Hows is one of the most popular spots in the Lake District and ideal for families.  It’s an easy circular walk around the tarn with majestic autumnal mountain views.  There are often local produce vans in the car park, in case you get peckish!

North East - Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland

Start from Craster for sweeping views of the harbour.  Great for the family as it’s not too strenuous and you may even spot the occasional seal!  Continue to Low Newton if you have the energy, or just turn back around once you get to the castle.
