Summer Camping Essentials

If you saw our recent camping post in association with Millets, you'll know we're nearly all set for summer adventures.  But there is lots of other very handy kit out there, and here are a few other vital items.  If you're going camping this summer, it's time to go shopping!

The Tegstove is a truly genius piece of kit that makes you ask why no-one thought of it before.  In fact, the product is so impressive that inventor Spencer Turner found himself facing an impressive three offers of funding from Dragons Peter Jones, Deborah Meaden and Touker Suleyman when he appeared on series 13 of Dragon’s Den.  Having accepted Peter's offer, production is now underway and this brilliant product is being snapped up by travellers and campers.

Tegstove is a one of a kind 'intelligent' portable gas stove which uses sophisticated technology and clever design to store and use energy in a smarter way.  It offers high performance cooking while also allowing you to charge mobile phones, tablets and GPS equipment, all in one simple to use device.  Tegstove uses a powerful Thermoelectric Generator (TEG) to produce energy, which is stored in an internal battery and harnesses the power of safer and lighter butane gas.  The robust and stable design make it the perfect stove for campers, festival goers, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts, with the added bonus of being able to charge electrical devices too.

Inventor Spencer Turner explains:

"As a team we’ve created a camping stove superior to anything else out there right now and one that eliminates all of the usual frustrations.  Efficiency, reliability, portability and safety were at the top of the wish list and the beauty of Tegstove is it meets all of these requirements with great simplicity.  Three adjustable legs provide a stable platform across 300mm of ground, so no worries about it toppling over, the heat is distributed over a wide cooking area too so you won’t just burn everything in the middle of the pan and it uses widely available, cost effective and clean-burning butane gas."

You can find out more about Tegstove at

Tegstove is  available to purchase from leading outdoors and camping retailers, such as Cotswold Outdoors, Millets, Blacks, Go Outdoors, OutdoorGB, Sports Direct (Field & Trek), Total Fishing Tackle and at multiple outlets online.  We've only used ours once so far, but were really impressed with it, such a great design.  It is hotly anticipated to be the must-have camping gadget this year.  RRP: £150

Another useful innovation, this time from Halfords, is their Folding Coolbag Trolley, a compact folding trolley with detachable over-sized cool bag.  The trolley has two wide wheels and a telescopic handle, making it stable, secure, and easy to wheel along.  We've found it incredibly easy to use, and so handy.  It's been up and down hills, beaches, footpaths, fields and survived all of it.  Plus we can pack plenty of food in, enough for lunch and snacks for 5.

The large capacity (40 litre) cool bag is tall enough to fit standard-sized 2 litre water/drinks bottles, and attaches to the trolley by two hooked bungee cords.  The bag has side carry handles for ease, a front zipped storage pocket and extra bungee cord netting on the top to secure non-cold items.  Ice blocks can be secured in the lid with useful straps.  The lining is removable for easy cleaning and it has a rigid base to support contents, but the whole thing folds flat when not in use for easy storage.  RRP £30 but currently on sale at just £12.50!

Hooked over the handle of our cool bag is the XL Waterproof Tartan Picnic Blanket.  We've searched for a long time to find a picnic blanket big enough for all five of us to sit on and fit the food and drinks on too.  This is it.  Measuring a huge 2m x 1.7m this lovely tartan rug has waterproof backing and plenty of space for everyone.  It has fared well on beaches of both pebbles and sand, in fields, and on impromptu side of the road stops as seen here.  It even served as a groundsheet recently when I forgot the proper one, and still looks as good as new.  Different colours/patterns are available, RRP £15, but currently on sale at £10.

And finally, the brilliant Halfords Urban Escape King Size Moon Chair.  This chair folds down as small as other camping/festival chairs, but becomes a big cosy armchair when unfolded.  Perfect for a bit of luxury when camping, with extra padding for comfort, the perfect place to relax and watch the sun go down.  The chair is suitable for up to 120kg weight and very wide, all three of our girls can sit in it together!  Although I may have turfed them out and kept it to myself to have a read in the sunshine...

The Moon Chair retails at £40, but is also currently on sale at £30.

Happy camping everyone!
