Top 7 Places You Must Visit in October

The summer holidays may be over, but there's no reason for your 2018 travel to finish just yet.  October half-term is just a few weeks away and with the onslaught of autumn term you may all be in need of a relaxing and fun break by then!  Here are 7 of the best destinations for an autumn break this October half-term.

Wroclaw, Poland

Widely regarded as the top European destination of 2018, the 'Polish Venice' is surrounded by canals and islands, with a network of more than 120 bridges to connect them.  Cathedral Island is the subject of a thousand postcards, but be sure to explore this delightful city by foot to find your favourite bridge and island.

Don't miss the beautiful university, the picturesque Rynek (Market) Square, the flower market and the botanical gardens and the Ostrów Tumski or old town.  Visit the oldest restaurant in the world Piwnica Åšwidnicka for authentic food and great atmosphere.

Fancy somewhere else a bit different?  Why not try elsewhere in Eastern Europe, perhaps Tallinn or Moscow?  Or head off to Iceland to discover all this amazing island has to offer, including the incredible Northern Lights.

Athens, Greece

While tourism to the islands is winding down, October is a great time to visit Greece's capital.  Its historic appeal is obvious - are they studying the Ancient Greeks this year? - and the wonderful architecture, street culture and shops will offer plenty to entertain the whole family.  The beach is just 15 minutes away too.

And don't even get me started on the wonderful food although, being in the city, if your little ones are feeling unadventurous there will be something other than Greek food for them to eat.  Take cardigans for the evenings as it can get much cooler, and don't miss sunset at the Temple of Poseidon.

Paris, France

Springtime in Paris is one thing, perfect for la vie en rose, but the city comes into its own in the autumn.  The crowds are less, the residents are back at work, and the city feels freer somehow.  Take in the monuments and the museums of course, but take time to explore the rest of the city, kicking leaves in the parks and enjoying plenty of downtime.  Wander the streets and alleys, peer into shops and cafes, and while away time in the endless squares.

Paris is a wonderful city to explore with children, just follow our tips for visiting Paris with kids.  Don't worry about the city's famous reputation for stuffiness, children are very welcome.  One tip is to explore the city's many multi-cultural restaurants and eat earlier in the evening for more family-friendly dining.  Out of season you can get some amazing hotel deals too!

Other cities to consider are Vienna, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome and Amsterdam.

Bilbao, Spain

Often overlooked in favour of the more obvious Spanish cities, Bilbao is a perfect city for families.  While away the warm evenings in the old alleyways of the Casco Viejo, enjoy the cuisine and the Rioja, but spend your days soaking up the culture.

The Guggenheim Museum is a must-see while the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum offers the finest collection of Spanish art outside Madrid.  It also boasts 19th and 20th century masterpieces from Gauguin to Francis Bacon.  Best of all you will find less crowds and quieter rooms at this time of year.

Outside the city there are charming Medieval towns like Balmaseda and Orduna to visit, and the Basque coast is only 30 minutes away.  The vineyards around Bilbao are particularly beautiful in their autumnal colours.

If you want to go somewhere warmer for a last pre-winter dose of sunshine, try Istanbul, Egypt, Marrakech, Gran Canaria or Tenerife.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Scotland's capital is lively at any time of year, but it is quieter although especially beautiful in autumn.  Sun, sky and nature combine in landscapes that will take your breath away and have your camera doing overtime.  No queuing for the castle, less crowds and lots to do will make this an easy but fun break for the whole family.

Be sure to explore the city's museums, the Botanic Gardens and refuel at wonderful cafes like Loudons, Cairngorm Coffee and Union of Genius.  If you visit over the weekend take the time to sample local produce at the city's many farmer's markets where the autumn harvest will bring the best produce.

Hvar Island, Croatia

If you still crave sunshine and blue sea, Hvar should be top off your list.  Often said to be the most beautiful island in Europe, it offers beautiful landscapes, crystal clear waters, hours of sunshine, and great food.  Top that with friendly people and a rich cultural heritage and there will be plenty to keep you busy and happy all week.

Hvar has a Franciscan monastery and fortress to explore, and don't miss a catamaran trip to the blue cave.  Enjoy Dalmatian cuisine and wine and exquisite accommodation - including great spas - making it a relaxing holiday for all.  This two day Hvar Island itinerary is a great place to start.

Devon, England

Autumn is a great time to visit Britain's south west.  Anywhere from Bath to Cornwall will be quieter and easier to get around.  Bring warm clothes for fish and chips on the beach, although you may get lucky with a warmer day or two.  The scenery is stunning, with every imaginable autumn colour, and everything is open until at least the end of October so you get all the attractions without the crowds.

Explore 150 million years of prehistoric history on the Jurassic Coast, discover historic Exeter and its cathedral (don't miss brunch or cakes at The Boston Tea Party), enjoy everything the English Riviera has to offer, or find your favourite spot to picnic on Dartmoor or in the dramatic north.  Expect lots of cosy pubs, log fires, great food, and brilliant days out.
