5 Tips for Healthy Eyes

The truth is, your eyes play an important role when it comes to your overall health and wellbeing, and if you look after them properly, you should be able to preserve your vision for a long time. For help when it comes to caring for your peepers, here are five ways to help ensure they stay in tip top condition.

1. Go for regular eye tests

Even if you think your vision is fine and your eyes are healthy, you should still go for regular tests. Ideally, you should schedule an optician appointment every two years. During the test, the specialist will conduct a thorough examination. They will be able to determine if you require glasses to correct your vision, or if you need a stronger prescription if you already wear specs. Additionally, they will look out for any potential health problems, such as glaucoma. Quick and painless, regular checkups are important if you want to maintain healthy eyes and vision.

2. Look after your contact lenses

While many people wear glasses, contact lenses are also popular. In fact, approximately three million people wear contact lenses in the UK. Although they are convenient and comfortable, if you don’t look after your lenses properly, you could be harming your eyes. Wearing lenses increases your risk of developing infections, so you should make the effort to clean, store and care for your contacts. For advice on how to take care of your contact lenses correctly, you should speak to a professional or read the instructions that come with your lenses.

3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Being overweight is not only a risk to your wellbeing, but it can have an effect on your sight too. If your weight is a problem, you’re more likely to develop the serious health condition diabetes, which can lead to diabetic eye disease and glaucoma. Problems such as these can result in vision loss, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key if you want to look after your eyes.

4. Use protection when necessary

Protecting your peepers is key if you want to keep them healthy. When necessary, you should use protective eyewear to shield this part of your face. For example, you may be required to wear goggles at work and you should endeavour to put on sunglasses when you’re exposed to the sun. Taking precautions like this could help preserve the condition of your sight and eye health.

5. Allow your eyes to rest

Giving your eyes time to rest is important. Sitting in front of a computer screen all day can often leave your peepers feeling fatigued and strained, so if you can, make sure you give them a break now and again. You could practice the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away from what you’re doing for 20 seconds. This is a simple and quick technique that you should be able to easily fit into your daily routine when you feel that they’re starting to tire.
