5 of the Biggest Disadvantages of Homeschooling #homeschooling #homeschool #disadvantages #homeeducation
When we tell people that our girls are home educated (UK term for homeschool), reactions can often be negative.
Being together all the time does have its problems, there are days when you’re all tired or it’s raining yet again and tempers fray, but they are few and far between.
5. Teaching is Hard!
Often along the lines of "How do you know what to teach them?" or, more commonly, "I couldn’t spend all day with my kids!"
Despite being a viable and increasingly common alternative to school, there are still plenty of people who think homeschooling is not for them.
But just what do they think the problems with home education are? Here are the disadvantages of homeschooling.
5 of the Biggest Disadvantages of Homeschooling
1. You Spend All Day Together
Are you prepared to have your kids home all day every day?
1. You Spend All Day Together
Are you prepared to have your kids home all day every day?
Many people see this as a disadvantage, but for some of us it’s real advantage.
Who would we rather spend our time with than these amazing little people we created?!
Being together all the time does have its problems, there are days when you’re all tired or it’s raining yet again and tempers fray, but they are few and far between.
In fact, for most homeschool families, spending more time together is a distinct advantage of homeschooling!
2. You're Going Against the Grain
Deciding on homeschooling will mean that you have to go against the norm.
Be prepared to be grilled friends, relatives, by other parents, even by complete strangers.
You choice will be questioned again, and again, and again. Ad inifnitum.
3. You Are Everything
Spending 24 hours of the day with your child and being their teacher is no joke.
When you decide to homeschool your children, you have to be prepared to spend all day with them, every day as we said above.
But the reality of being a homeschool teacher to your kids is that you have to be hands on, right there to supervise their lessons and check on their progress.
You also have to choose a homeschool style, maybe select a curriculum and plan their lessons, think of activities and make or buy homeschooling resources.
This is why most homeschool families have one parent at home full-time, so you need to be prepared for that, able to find alternative part-time work or work from home, and/or learn how to manage on a lower or a single income.

4. The Cost
Most would think that a homeschooling education is cheaper. This is not the case.
Although you are not paying for any tuition fee or school uniform and other expenses, you do have to shell out money for the curriculum, homeschool books and materials that you will be using, and pay for field trips and any extra curriculars.
As one parent will probably need to quit his or her job to become a full-time teacher, this can pose a financial problem.
However, it is possible to juggle with unconventional work hours, working from home, and tightening your financial belt.
5. Teaching is Hard!
Being a teacher is not an easy task.
First of all you really have to be patient with your child as he or she will not always understand the lesson as fast or as easily as you want.
Do not lose your temper because this will only make matters worst.
Remember that it's perfectly normal for your kid to be behind in some subjects or to take a longer time understanding lessons.
Not only will you have to patient with your child but you also have to be on all the time, and put on an enthusiastic appearance, even those times you are not really in the mood to teach them their lessons, or if it's a subject you don't love.

Those are the 5 biggest disadvantages of homeschooling, but if you ask me they are all easily overcome - if they're even a problem to begin with, which I doubt!
