How to Encourage your Child to be More Active

Beyond benefits to the body, physical exercise can give you a lot of mental benefits. The same benefits apply to your child too.

Exercise can help them with any behavioural issues they may be experiencing and it also helps them to relieve anxiety and tension.

Sport is also great for helping your child to make friends. If you’re not quite sure how to encourage your kids to be more active then simply look below.

Put a Focus on Fun

Help your child to find a sport that they can thoroughly enjoy.

The more that they enjoy an activity, the more likely they will be to stick at it.

If you can, make the effort to get the whole family involved. This is a great way for you to spend time together, so keep that in mind.

Another thing you need to do is choose an activity that is appropriate for them, developmentally.

An 8-year-old won’t be ready for weight lifting or going on 3-mile runs but they might be able to play football, go on a bike ride or even try their hand at swimming.

If you are buying a bike for your child, make sure that you also get them kids helmets.

Provide them with a Safe Environment

Make sure that your child has all the equipment that they need and make sure that they can practice and play as much as they like.

You also need to make sure that they can be safe doing so.

If your child doesn’t have any clothing appropriate for the activity then now is the time for you to help them with that. 

Give them Active Toys

Young children should always have access to balls, jump ropes and other active toys.

If you can ensure this then you will be able to give them the help they need to stay active while encouraging them to pursue their passions. 

Play with your Kids

Help your kids to learn a new sport, and encourage them to try new activities where possible.

You can also have fun together by going on a hike or even by trying to go on a family bike ride.

The more you can make it feel like fun, rather than an activity, the better.

Some children tend to be overscheduled when it comes to homework, music lessons and other commitments.

If this is the case then it could be worth trying to lessen their responsibilities by giving them time to pursue other interests.

If you want them to be active then you also need to make sure that they are not being burnt out.

Don’t Overdo It

Even if your kids love to be active, you have to make sure that you don’t overdo it.

If your kids are experiencing pain or discomfort after exercise then you need to slow things down for them until they can develop their fitness a little better.

You also need to make sure that exercise is not interfering with their daily schedule, for example, leaving them too tired to play with their friends or get their homework done.
