Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and honestly, I don’t know about you, but I love any excuse to sprinkle a little extra love into our homeschool day.
Sure, it’s traditionally a day for chocolates, cards, and maybe a romantic dinner, but in our house, it’s more about cuddles, crafts, read alouds and learning together.
Read on to find out how to incorporate Valentine's Day into your homeschool day.
Over the years, we’ve built our own little Valentine’s Day traditions, usually involving messy arts and crafts, sweet treats, and lots of laughter (sometimes the kind that makes your cheeks hurt).
I thought I’d share a few of our favourite ways to make Valentine’s Day both fun and educational - because yes, you can do both without anyone noticing you slipped in a little maths or history.
5 Ideas That Will Make Valentine’s Day a Great Homeschool Day
Here are five of our favourite ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in our homeschool:
1. Get Learning with a Little Valentine’s Day History
Before we dive into the hearts and chocolate, we like to start with a mini-history lesson.
Who was St. Valentine? Why do we celebrate this day, and why do we give flowers, cards and chocolates?
Did you know Valentine’s Day is celebrated in all sorts of ways across the world?
Spend the morning combining some research, some stories and some written work to cover social studies and history.
For older kids: Try videos like Bet You Didn’t Know: Valentine’s Day or 7 Things You Didn’t Know About Valentine’s Day.
After watching, they could write a short report or notebooking page, or make a comic retelling the story of St. Valentine.
For younger kids: CaliFamTV and BreadNBeyond have fun, simple explanations.

2. Valentine’s Day Maths (Yes, Really!)
Candy hearts and heart-shaped chocolates aren’t just for gifting - and snacking - they’re a maths goldmine!
- Toddlers & Preschoolers: Sort hearts by colour or size. Count them together.
- Early Elementary: Estimate how many candy hearts are in a mason jar, then check by counting. Closest guess wins the jar!
- Upper Elementary & Teens: Create fractions, percentages, or simple probability problems with the candy. "If 30% of the hearts are red, how many is that in a jar of 100?"
It’s amazing how fun maths becomes when there’s chocolate at stake!!
3. Arts, Crafts, and Heart-Filled Fun
Nothing says Valentine’s Day like a handmade card - or a bit of glitter chaos, of course!
For toddlers & preschoolers:
- Fingerprint heart art: Everyone stamps fingerprints around a heart sticky note. Peel off the heart when dry for a colourful family masterpiece.
- Heart-shaped crayon rubs: Place heart cut-outs under paper and let them colour over with wax crayons. Use them on their sides to do this, like brass rubbing.
- Colour Valentine's cards: Grab these free printable Valentine's cards in cute designs, print out on cardstock and colour in.
For elementary-aged kids:
- LOVE tape art: Write LOVE with painter’s tape on paper or a square canvas, paint over it, then remove the tape to reveal the word.
- Make: handmade Valentine cards for friends, family or neighbours, or make this cute Valentine's Day heart wand.
For older kids & teens:
- DIY Valentine gift jars: Fill jars with little notes, candies, or inspirational quotes. Find mroe ideas here: Creative Non-Food Gift Jar Ideas You Can Make
- Make a Valentine-themed scrapbook page capturing family memories from the past year.
Crafting together is more than just fun,it’s a lovely way to bond, chat, and share giggles over glue disasters - and successes.
